Major Rewards Offered For Tourism Champions During Economic Downturn
South East Wales, February 2009 – Capital Region Tourism, the lead body for tourism in South East Wales, is launching a new bursary scheme that will provide 20 individuals up to £1000 each to use for training purposes. Individuals in tourism will have the chance to win this substantial bursary to improve their skills and develop their careers. It is believed that maintaining investment in human resource development training for all will maintain the region’s competitive edge during the downturn and accelerate growth when the better times return.
The aim of the Training Bursary Scheme is to build successful candidates’ capacity to raise the quality of the region’s tourism product, and improve the visitor experience throughout South East Wales. Applications will be considered from those able to demonstrate how the investment will impact positively on tourism in the region. The scheme will help individuals involved in the development and operation of tourist related facilities and services, from hotels and attractions, to restaurants and transport providers, who would like to undertake training or personal development that will improve their ability to contribute to a high quality visitor experience. Those most likely to succeed will have to demonstrate previous commitment and a proactive approach to their own development as well as how this investment will benefit their organisation and the wider tourism destination.
Any training which can be demonstrated to be of significant benefit to the individual and of benefit to tourism in South East Wales will be looked at, including, but not exclusively, such areas as management, digital media and ICT, customer service, craft and technical skills, environmental impacts of tourism. Anything from recognised qualifications through an educational establishment (e.g. an HNC) or professional body (e.g. CIM Diploma) to bespoke training delivered on a one to one basis by a private training provider or consultant will be considered.
Alice Brown, HRD Coordinator for Capital Region Tourism explains why the organisation is offering this great opportunity: “We have a commitment to the development of people within tourism. Development of people is much more than improving vocational skills or academic knowledge, though this is an important part of it. It’s about development as a person too. This bursary scheme acknowledges that investment in tourism products and their promotion must go hand in hand with investment in people.”
Capital Region Tourism covers the following local authority areas: Blaenau Gwent, Bridgend, Caerphilly, Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil, Monmouthshire, Newport, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Torfaen and Vale of Glamorgan. In addition the organisation works with Brecon Beacons Tourism.
Anyone interested in the bursary scheme will need to express an interest formally by Friday 20 February 2009. People interested in the bursary scheme and the application process should contact Alice Brown at Capital Region Tourism (tel: 029 2041 6418, alice.brown@capitalregiontourism.org or www.capitalregiontourism.org/skills)
Tips on Planning a Caribbean Vacation during Hurricane Season
When one dreams of a Caribbean vacation, sunbathing, water sports, and spending lazy afternoons on a hammock under the trees is what springs to mind. But a hurricane can down the shutters even on those simple pleasures, let alone popular activities like snorkeling and SCUBA diving.
So what is the strategy to plan a vacation in the Caribbean during hurricane season?
• Hurricanes in the Caribbean are more common in the months of August, September and October, though the official season is from June to November. Scheduling a holiday early in the season (June or July) or at the end of the season in November considerably reduces the risk of running into a hurricane while you are there.• Choosing a Caribbean destination like Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Trinidad, Tobago or Barbados is wiser, since these islands are rarely hit by hurricanes.• Check for information on the start of the rainy season in your destination choice – Curacao’s rainy season starts in October, whereas Aruba and Turks and Caicos islands get very little rainfall while in St. Lucia, the rainy season coincides with the hurricane season. • National Weather Service website’s hurricane awareness link gives extended weather forecasts, hurricane warnings or travel advisories,• Book a stay in resorts that offer a hurricane guarantee i.e. allow rescheduling with no additional charge in case the local weather bureau predicts a hurricane during the days booked. It goes without saying that travelers should take the effort to read the fine print to see what the guarantee offers and what is not covered.• Taking travel insurance at the time of travel reservations is a good idea. Rescheduling or claiming refunds would be hassle-free, especially when airports are closed down and flights get cancelled because of a hurricane.
Remember, Mother Nature is unpredictable and a hurricane can change course and hit a vacation destination. To be prepared for such an eventuality,
• Check if your vaccinations are up-to-date and carry a first aid kit and a few days reserve of essential medication • When a hurricane alert is given, contact the local embassy on the island and alert them to your presence.• Check with the hotel reception for hurricane safety procedures and follow their advice – understand that the locals have the experience to deal with the situation.• Keep a copy of your travel documents handy for urgent evacuation.
How Not to Let your Kids Drive you Crazy During your Family Vacation
Family vacations are generally tortuous for both parents and children, but since it’s only families who go to vacations together that stay together, neither of them have any choice. Parents will have to make sure that their kids remain safe without being a spoilsport while kids will have to devise a way to have fun without getting caught.
If you’re planning to have a family vacation soon, here are some tips to ensure that your family vacation would be both pleasant for you, your partner, and your children.
Tips and Ideas to Have a Perfect Family Vacation
Choosing the Right Location Not all vacation spots can offer the types of entertainment that your kids would be interested in. Research online at least a month in advance and look for places that focus on providing fun for the whole family. Avoid going to places that require you to wait in line like theme parks. If you intend to visit famous tourist attractions, consider doing so during off-peak season.
When you have a list of such places ready, the next thing you do is find which ones of them fit your budget. Narrow the list further by selecting the places which you’ll be able to reach in the shortest time possible. Remember that kids are notoriously bad travelers because of the amount of complaints they can make so it’s important that you don’t head for any site which will require you to spend long hours on the road. If you really wish to head for a distant place, consider taking the plane.
On the Way Activities If you’ll be spending an inordinate amount of time cooped inside a car, ship, or plane in order to get to your destination, you’ll need to prepare a number of activities to keep your kids occupied. Without such activities, your kids will probably be bored and restless after an hour’s worth of travel and they’ll be nagging you ceaselessly afterwards.
During Vacation Here’s what you should do to prevent your kids from going wild the moment you and your family arrives at your vacation destination.
Provide your kids with their own money, and let them savor the idea of being the adult and in control of their finances. Of course, make sure that they understand that they’re also responsible for keeping the money safe and making it last till the end of vacation.
Give them their own wardrobe space and have them unpack their belongings by themselves. This will certainly keep them busy for at least half an hour.
Promise them incentives every time they follow your orders.
If you and your partner need some private time, don’t leave them alone with only the television set to keep them company. Make sure that you’ve also packed their video systems as well as their toys so they’ll have a variety of activities to choose from.
When eating meals, allow them to eat by themselves and spend time with their newfound friends. And as this is a vacation, when you do eat out together as a [...]
